Niagara Wine Trail

Just minutes from Niagara Falls and Buffalo, the Niagara Wine Trail USA is regarded as a new up-and-coming region, but the art and science of grape growing and winemaking has been in our area for many years. There are records of a winery that was open during the 19th century, and one of our current member wineries produces fruit on vineyards that are over one hundred years old.

The Niagara Wine Trail, USA is situated between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario. This geography has created a unique micro-climate, suitable for the production of the grapes that we use to create our fine wines. The character of our local soils, from the dolomitic limestone soils of the Escarpment to the gravel silts near the lakeshore, and our moderate climate ideal for growing a wide variety of fruit, including vinifera grapes such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot.

The components of fruit that we enjoy are the aromas and the flavours. These are from chemicals in the fruit called fruit esters. The fruit esters are long chain polymers and they take time to build. The longer the growing season, the more the fruit builds the fruit esters and the better the fruit smells and tastes. That is why the length of growing season is important to both the fresh fruit and wine industry.
